The U.K. team has been based at Needspace’s Islington offices since March 2016 and we couldn’t be more content with our office!
mothers2mothers (m2m) is an African NGO that employs and trains HIV-positive women from local communities as frontline healthcare workers in both health facilities and local communities. These Mentor Mothers’ intimate understanding of the challenges of living with HIV gives them a unique ability to form trusted relationships with other women, helping them to make life-saving decisions.
When m2m started in 2001, the prognosis for women in sub-Saharan Africa testing HIV-positive was bleak. Rampant stigma and discrimination, a lack of accurate information, and severely overcrowded health centres made it difficult for pregnant women to access life-saving treatment. m2m Founder Dr. Mitch Besser’s solution was simple yet effective – employ local HIV-positive women to provide essential health education and behaviour change support to newly diagnosed pregnant women.
Fast-forward to 2018 and there are now almost 3,000 HIV-positive women employed as Mentor Mothers across eight countries. Our peer-based model has evolved too. While eliminating paediatric AIDS is still at the heart of our efforts, we now combat HIV’s causes and effects in a comprehensive way by focusing not only on mothers and babies, but on the health of everyone in a household.
In 2017, we enrolled nearly 2.3 million new clients into care and delivered services at 1,000 geo locations including health centres and surrounding communities. Critically, for the fourth year in a row, m2m achieved virtual elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV among our enrolled clients.
All of this incredible work is the result of a dedicated group of staff, volunteers, partners and fundraisers. Our U.K. team has been based at Needspace’s St Mark’s Studios in Islington since March 2016 and we couldn’t be more content with our office – the hub of all our activity and the site of many happy memories and milestones. The support that Tracey Wallace, Centre Manager at Needspace, continues to provide is second to none. Aside from being incredibly efficient and helpful, Tracey has become a friend to us all at m2m. Our team are very fortunate to have her by our side, maintaining the calm and comforting office space we’ve come to call home
m2m looks forward to spending many more years at St Mark’s Studios as we work tirelessly towards our goal of creating a generation free from HIV.
